Let's Go!!!
This year’s math week will take place March 3 to 7! We originally planned to run it one week later (March 10-14), as March 14 is the Pi Day (3.14), but later we realized that the Pi Day week is going to be March break! Here are a few activities we have prepared for you! Friday In-Person Events On Friday March 7 (last day of school before the break!), we’ll be offering treats (like pies) that you can buy for \(\pi\) dollars (or maybe \(\frac{\pi}{2}\) dollars :). ...
Day 4 - Puzzles
Oh yah! You made it to the final day of the puzzle solving event! However, math week is not over yet. In fact, the big, in-person event in happening on Friday (March 7)! Check out the event planning page for more details. To conclude our problem solving tournament, we will be giving you three number theory puzzles today. Number theory is just the study of numbers! To be precise, whole numbers (integers). ...
Day 3 - Puzzles
The third day of our math week will be about combinatorics, a branch of mathematics useful especially in real life. It is all about probability and counting. Submission is now open! Submission for Day 3 puzzles has closed :/ -- hrs -- mins -- secs Submit! If you are able to solve any of the puzzles, submit your solution by Thursday March 6, 11:25am to win a treat! Additionally, the first solver of each problem gets a bonus! Check out the event planning page for more details. ...
Day 1 - Solutions
Puzzle 1 - Music Festival We can solve this problem by “simulating” the process. Let’s consider: how many full rows will need to get off before I do? First the cellists/bassists have to go, then all the violinists also need to go since they all sit in front of me, and then the \(2\) violist rows will go before it’s my row’s turn to get off. That gives us a total of \(12 + 13 + 2 = 27\) full rows. Since each row has \(2\) benches of \(2\) players, there are \(4\) players in each row, so \(27 \times 4 = 108\) players will go first. ...
Day 2 - Puzzles
Welcome to the second day! In today’s problem set, we will be exploring geometry! Angles, segments, polygons, circles, coordinates… Also, if you’ve solved some puzzles on day 1, we will release the solutions tonight! By the way, today’s puzzle 3 is very fun! Even if you don’t want to solve it, I recommend that you read through it. Submission is now open! Submission for Day 2 puzzles has closed :/ -- hrs -- mins -- secs Submit! ...
Day 1 - Puzzles
For the first day of Math Week, we will be focusing on algebra, the study of abstract systems involving variables (our favorite \(x\)), operations and more. Submission is now open! Submission for Day 1 puzzles has closed :/ -- hrs -- mins -- secs Submit! If you are able to solve any of the puzzles, submit your solution by Tuesday March 4, 11:25am to win a treat. Puzzle 1 - Music Festival As you know, Lisgar is famous for its marvelous music program. Our school ensembles, led by the hardworking music teachers, have taken part in many music festivals. This year the Lisgar Symphony Orchestra performed in the Capital Region Music Festival on February 22, 2025. The festival was held in Earl of March SS and the musicians had to get there by school bus. The school bus can be modelled as follows: ...
