This year’s math week will take place March 3 to 7! We originally planned to run it one week later (March 10-14), as March 14 is the Pi Day (3.14), but later we realized that the Pi Day week is going to be March break!

Here are a few activities we have prepared for you!

Friday In-Person Events

On Friday March 7 (last day of school before the break!), we’ll be offering treats (like pies) that you can buy for \(\pi\) dollars (or maybe \(\frac{\pi}{2}\) dollars :).

As this Math Week is \(\pi\)-themed, we will also be hosting two live competitions on that day!

  • The circle drawing competition: Who can draw the perfect circle? We’ll be inviting math teachers (the professional circle drawers) to judge your circles. Practice it online here.
  • The \(\pi\) recitation competition: Who can recite the most number of digits in \(\pi\)? Take the quiz online here.

Everything will be in the Memorial Hall!

Online Problem Solving Event

Before all those exciting Friday events take place, you can win some treats for free by solving math puzzles over the week! The puzzles have been carefully made by us, and there is a story behind many of them (we got inspiration from real life stories happening in Lisgar). In addition, if you’re a teacher reading this, you are also welcome to participate!

Each day, we’ll be giving you a few math puzzles of different levels, for a total of four days. Every morning we release the problems, and you’ll have a whole day to work on any of them. If you are able to solve some of the puzzles before the start of next day’s lunch, you will receive a small treat from us! Of course, harder puzzles give you bigger rewards. Also, the first solver of each problem receives a bonus!

All problems and solutions will be released on this site. A Google Form will be attached to each day’s problems so that you can submit. A member from the math club will review every single submission. We’ll get back to you if you win something! The latest posts will appear on the home page. If you miss a day’s problem/solution, no worry! Go to the Archive to see all posts.

The treat distribution will also happen on Friday.

Have fun with math, \(\pi\), circles and puzzles!
